GUFF and JETS

This year I am standing as a candidate for GUFF, and the race has just begun. GUFF, the Going Under Fan Fund, collects money to enable well-known science fiction fans from Europe and Australasia to visit each other and get to know each other's fandoms better. The candidates are voted on, and each vote is accompanied by a donation.

This year's race is about sending a European fan to Convergence 2, 8-11 June 2007, in Australia. There is more information and details about GUFF on http://www.users.on.net/~juliettewoods/guff.html.

GUFF, like its older siblings TAFF and DUFF, is a great idea and should be vigorously supported. It's not about winning, it's about sending enthusiasts over the world to meet and have a good time, getting to know each other better. If you're an SF fan, follow the link to the information page above and consider voting, or at least donating money to the cause. The voting period this year is short, so the more money that can be raised, the better.

Another fan fund race whose deadline is approaching is JETS, the Japanese Expeditionary Travel Scholarship, created to send a European science fiction fan to Nippon 2007, the 65th World Science Fiction Convention in Yokohama. There is more information and an electronic ballot at http://www.fandom.se/forum/viewtopic.php?t=506. I have nominated Jukka Halme for this race, a more worthy fan than most and a truly BFF (Big Frame Fan). Consider voting for him!

I have shamefully ask: are us completely uninvolved North Americans allowed to vote in GUFF? I know that we're not in JETS, but I'd love to vote in the GUFF race

I voted in the last two GUFF races, so it seems to be kosher, just as Australians have voted in TAFF.

Indeed the rules say:

"Voting in the race to send a European fan to Convergence 2, 8--11 June 2007 (the Australian National Convention, http://www.natcon.org.au/2007/), is open to anyone who was active in fandom prior to June 2004, and who contributes at least GBP5 or AUD10 (or the equivalent in other currencies) to the fund."

I thought only Europeans and Australasians could vote, but apparently that's not the case. So vote, by all means!

And now I'm going to shamelessly say; Vote for Jophan!
As a first time worldcon goer in Glasgow where I met Jophan, and as a committee member for Convergence, I think it would be fantastic to have him come over here!
Vote vote vote!! :-)

Yay! At least one vote from down under! Now I have to get out there and twist more arms. Let's see, Australian arms should be twisted anti-clockwise, right?

I guess so, yes.

Opinions vary, but the only rules are what's in the ballot, and that tends to drift over time. As things stand, for the last few races at least votes have been accepted from fandom in general.
