Satellites controlling car brakes?

From BreakingNews.ie:

Minister for Transport Martin Cullen is holding talks with officials from the Swedish government today to get tips on road safety.

A report published this week listed Sweden as one of the best countries in Europe at enforcing road safety.

The country is developing a satellite positioning system to check speeds and control a car's brakes if it goes over the limit.

We are?!?

I think they mean "control the accelerator", not the brake. And yes, they are. Keyword: "ISA".

Ah, that page sounded a lot less sciencefictional and scary. Yes, that seems to be a good system to implement in cars, for those who want it.

Would be even better to implement it in the cars of those who don't want it! Driving fast is not a human right -- fun, yes, but not necessary.

Driving fast is not a human right.

Heh. Try to tell this my fellow citizens over here in Germany. :-)

You remember the dirigible crash at the beginning of "A Meeting with Medusa"? An example of what happens when control gets routed through a satellite and speed of light delays cut in....

Your country is officially pretty damn cool. And not just because of the car thing. :)

Jeez ...

... and I thought the photoradar systems here were bad ...
