GUFF and JETS
Mar. 30th, 2007 02:09 pmThis year I am standing as a candidate for GUFF, and the race has just begun. GUFF, the Going Under Fan Fund, collects money to enable well-known science fiction fans from Europe and Australasia to visit each other and get to know each other's fandoms better. The candidates are voted on, and each vote is accompanied by a donation.
This year's race is about sending a European fan to Convergence 2, 8-11 June 2007, in Australia. There is more information and details about GUFF on http://www.users.on.net/~juliettewoods/guff.html.
GUFF, like its older siblings TAFF and DUFF, is a great idea and should be vigorously supported. It's not about winning, it's about sending enthusiasts over the world to meet and have a good time, getting to know each other better. If you're an SF fan, follow the link to the information page above and consider voting, or at least donating money to the cause. The voting period this year is short, so the more money that can be raised, the better.
Another fan fund race whose deadline is approaching is JETS, the Japanese Expeditionary Travel Scholarship, created to send a European science fiction fan to Nippon 2007, the 65th World Science Fiction Convention in Yokohama. There is more information and an electronic ballot at http://www.fandom.se/forum/viewtopic.php?t=506. I have nominated Jukka Halme for this race, a more worthy fan than most and a truly BFF (Big Frame Fan). Consider voting for him!
