Where are all the zebras?

I got off the bus today (3 km from my job - I do that a couple of times a week and walk the rest of the way to get some exercise) and tried to cross the road on the zebra crossing. However, the oncoming car didn't slow down and refused to let me cross the road. The driver scowled at me. I glared back. After I had crossed the road I looked up at the road sign to see exactly where it was - maybe it's hard to see for motorists when the bus has pulled in.
They have taken it down and (I assume, see below) erased the white markings on the road! There is no crossing there any more. I know it was there at least two weeks ago, so they must have done this very recently. It makes me wonder whether they shouldn't put up some sort of warning sign when they remove a zebra crossing. Who looks up to see whether it is still there every time you come to a crossing where you know there is one? And in winter the road is covered with snow and ice, so you can't see the markings on the road.
Well, I lived to tell the tale, so I shouldn't complain. But it's a rather heavily trafficked road, it's going to be harder to cross now. Just like in America.
