Lousy night, didn't fall asleep until sometime after 3 AM and woke up repeatedly until it was time to rise. I've slept badly on and off for the last seven years now; no idea why. But it's not too bad, the bad spells are rarer these days and I get by during the day when they strike.

Gearing up for the big banquet/event in the local Tolkien society on Saturday, even though I will be in the kitchen most of the time. The plot is as follows:

A number of years have passed since the end of the War of the Ring, and in lonely Morthond Vale, bitter, haughty old Naneth sits on her throne, lamenting the loss of her sons and grandsons all. The fief is without an heir, the glory of the olden days gone, and she refuses to give up her hold on life until she has found an heir. She has declared this to the world, and five people have shown up, each with a claim to Morthond vale. Who will prove the true heir?

Should be fun!

I sure hope it'll get fun, I only wish someone could shut up that damn priest on the mailing list. He might as well repeat over and over that the first attribute in order to become an heir is to have a dick, and then comes the rest of the drivel.
He's so damn unfunny, but I guess some are laughing, since he can go on undisturbed as usual.

He is possibly even worse since he got married.

I shall never never never join the "elder garde", due to farty old men like him.

I have to admit I haven't really read more than the first of his mails on the issue. I see them as pretty harmless, truth be told, but Fingal here at work commented earlier today that he didn't find them especially funny either. As long as they are in some way "in character", I shrug that sort of thing off easily. I'm more disturbed by some of the views these guys have on real-life issues.

I still like our priest as a person, though. I think it might be a healthy mind exercise being friends with people that you disagree with on almost every single issue in life! Or perhaps it isn't. Anyway, I think the event will be fun.

As to the "elder guard", well, the world doesn't end whether you join or not. Apart from all the surface hype, we're not exactly doing anything earth-shattering that you have to be part of, you know... ;)

I have plenty of friends whom I don't agree with, and I've even had some decent discussions with the priest. I just don't agree with you that some elder men are as harmless as many seem to think they are. I know for a fact that they affect younger people more than we think. Just because we are secure and independent thinkers doesn't mean other people are. But that's always the way of the world.

The real life issues seep into the society, we'd just like to pretend that they don't. Our silence equals agreement in many ways, even though you'd think not. It irritates me, but I don't care enough to bother anymore.

Of course the world doesn't end, or even care about me joining or not, no illusions of grandeur here. Y'all have my ex now, and he enjoys it plenty and fits in, I'm sure.
I know the surface is hype mostly, if you've been on the board for x amount of years, you sort of get that. ;)

Hm, I think I must apologize that I brought this to your journal.
Don't mind me, friend. Have a great party!

(I would delete this, but it seems rude as well)

Oh, I don't mind. Well, I mind a little to discuss these things in public, but that's all.

Thanks!

Oh, I didn't mean that his (or anyone else's) opinions are harmless generally. I'm talking specifically about the context of discussing who is the true heir to a fief in fictional Gondor. But perhaps I should read what he has written before saying any more on the issue...

nah, let it go. What's the option, to gag him?

I'm whining, I realized that. There's not much to do, and perhaps there really is something funny in it and he's caught up in his own role.
